Denhome Sailing Club Walk!!!

Denholme Sailing club went on a fab walk on 11th of January; we walked around St Ives and saw some brilliant views When we walked through the woods on the way back to the car park we saw loads of beautiful wooden statues. Thea and I loved the walk even though it was blowing a gale but although we sometimes got cold it was still a very, very good day especially when we all sat down and had lunch together.

Denholme SC goes walkabout

No doubt, after the usual excesses of the festive season, we're all feeling like we could do with some exercise. So, how about a pleasant walk with other club members?

Cameron is arranging a walk of about 3 hours (roughly 6-7 miles) from St Ives at Harden which is between Cullingworth and Bingley, 4 miles from the sailing club. Start will be at 10am on Sunday 11 January. Nothing too difficult, just a gentle walk to help burn off a mince pie or two. We will walk as a group, no-one gets left behind!

There are two entrances to St Ives, we will meet at the new free car park which is situated by the Bingley end of St Ives, just off the B6429. It is easy to find. If you approach from Bingley, head across Ireland Bridge towards Harden and the entrance is signposted about 0.5miles on the right, at the top of the S bends. Approaching from Cullingworth, head through Harden towards Bingley, past Woodbank Nurseries and the entrance is on your left about 0.75 out of the village. If you need more detailed directions, just let Cameron know and he will send something better.

The intended route will start at the car park and head through the woods towards Altar Lane with a brief stop at Druid's Altar to take in the view of the valley below. Then we will continue along Altar Lane to cross Keighley Road and take a track towards Harden Moor. From there, we will head across to Catstones Moor and down towards Cullingworth via Dolphin Lane where we join a path that takes us to Hallas Bridge and Harden Beck (which is fed by Doe Park and Hewenden). Following the beck down through the woods we will pass Goit Stock Waterfall which can be pretty impressive following wet weather. From there the route takes us into Harden from where we will re-enter St Ives and back to the car park.

Please confirm if you think you intend to come. If you change your mind on the day, it's not a problem, just don't turn up - all Cameron needs is a rough idea how many might be coming.

Non-members are welcome so, if you've got visitors that weekend, drag them along too!

It goes without saying that you will need suitable clothing for cold and/or wet weather and although you can get way with "stout shoes" on a walk like this, walking boots are a better option as some of it can be muddy and slippery. We will stop for lunch somewhere about half way round the route, so bring a packed lunch and drinks. Exactly where depends really on what the weather's like on the day as we may need a sheltered place.

Firework Party 2nd November

The club will be holding a fireworks party shortly after sailing finishes on 2 November. As was the case last year, due to restrictions imposed by our lease, we can not have a bonfire but last year's firework party was still an enjoyable event.

We will be providing pie and peas.

The club will provide some fireworks but you are welcome to bring some of your own to add to the display. However, they will need to be launched by the club volunteers who are running the "official" display so as to maintain some semblance of control.

It would help us to plan catering if you could email me if you will be coming. Please reply by 30 October if possible.

Great Rivers of the East

Only a short distance into our pilgrimage and already we are passing areas thick with prayer flags fluttering on a light breeze, yesterdays preparations had gone well with Guru Cornish and Guru Durham passing many donations over the Smalleys’ altar. We had walked the long path to a lesser temple more suited to the novices. Returning to our craft we were happy to see the masters back with many tales to tell even at such a late hour. After we had taken to our sleeping mats, Guru Durham enthralled us with his special chants which can only be done after causing self harm to his very own toes with parts of our own craft’s furniture; with such preparations our journey could not fail.

Our aim was the great holy river of the east: much talked about but only travelled by the few. After passing the first of the flags we came upon an area of great challenge to the quest; many forces were firing upon us but their wrath was absorbed by a magical red-sailed yacht which could sail through the exploding and hissing of many arms with no damage, shielding us from the evil upon the cliffs. As we approached the mystical river the prayer flags became denser. These should be treated with respect as many of those laying out these flags are so frail they are granted payments from the government to help with their incapacity and lack of work. Yet still they come out in all weathers, tending to the flags and the mystical netted dream catching pots they attach under the seas.

At last we were on the holy Tyne, an area joyous with much partying in praise of the gods. It is an area of such warmth and kindness that young ladies feel safe enough to leave their homes at night with barely any need for clothing, and men can be seen shedding all comfort wearing only a t-shirt regardless of painful climatic conditions. As our craft mainly contained novices we were stopped from directly entering the great city but allowed to rest at St. Peter’s; the final approach was only allowed on foot at an hour so early some of the pilgrims from the night before were still on view. Their experiences had been so intense they found it hard to walk or speak and even their complexion had been changed – if only one of us could reach such a state of enlightenment!

Returning to our berth with the blessed bread of Tesco Extra, some onboard spoke of a great ringing but were unable to trace its source. We broke our fast and set off to retrace our course into the mists. After a short while it gave many of us novices much joy to discover Brother Pudsey had been entered by the spirits in such a way as to alter his ability to speak, his movement was much impaired and he had attained the ghostly complexion of the pure at heart.

Snow-pen Day

Our open day this year was on 6th April.

The Bradford branch of the RNLI set up a display to raise awareness and money for the RNLI. Bradford actually has its own lifeboat and has done since 1859. The current boat is one of the fastest in the RNLI fleet and has been involved in a number of rescues. Listen to Martin Chappellow of Bradford RNLI.

At first, the weather was fine although very cold. However, snow soon started to fall and committee members could be observed sheltering in the clubhouse.

However, the barbecue was out of doors and for some people hunger was a stronger force than warmth.

The day was reasonably well attended despite the weather and some visitors were even brave enough to go for a sail.

Most sailing was done by DSC winter sailors, though...

some of whom showed remarkably little respect for the safety boat and camera crew!

Walkway

John has made a new walkway for the jetty to replace one that had been broken during the summer of dis-reservoir. We now have the use of both jetties again which is definitely good news when there is as good a turnout as this week.

Today we had dry(ish) weather and wind. In a generous mood the wind direction could have been described as variable; somehow Alan as OD managed to plot a course that had every mark to windward!

Lunch today was pizza and beans.

Breaking the Ice

Today had sunshine and a sky without clouds. The far end of the pond temptingly offered a breeze but the jetties were surrounded by ice. John looked at the ice and said "I'm not sailing in that; it's half an inch thick!"

However, the ice-breaker, sorry, safety boat was launched...

but the boat didn't seem sure that it wanted to go out and break the ice.

Eventually, though, Tony was able to set off to try break the ice in the hope that wind and sunshine would clear the pond.

Unfortunately, although the sunshine was willing, the wind was not and whilst we were eating lunch (chili, chips and peas) the wind dropped completely. Better luck next week?

Sailing

The 2008 sailing season has begun with the launch of the Hypo season last Sunday. The weather was warm, the sun was shining, the sky was clear and there was almost enough wind.

In the break between races the boats were tied to the jetty...

whilst the sailors adjourned to the clubhouse for pie and peas.

It's good to be back on the water.

Catching-up

Here are a few pictures that I really should have posted last year.

The end of the 2007 sailing season was marked by high pressure: beautiful, clear days with very little wind.

We weren't able to have a bonfire for Guy Fawkes Night so had to make do with fireworks on the jetty.

The Laying-Up Supper was well-attended with great food as always (especially the curry).

Alan very capably performed his first official duty as Commodore, closing the 2007 season.

Spice of Life

If variety is the spice of life the last two sailing trips could not have been better; the first was in early September to a quiet corner of the Norfolk broads with three days of snoozing amongst the reeds and sailing in a nice breeze with good company. If anyone is heading to the broads for a sail I would recommend Martham boat Development Company as an excellent launch site and base, near to some of the best sailing areas. Be ready to operate at a slower pace than normal to get the best out of a trip.

For the next trip the word relaxing doesn’t appear, replaced with the words stress, competition, performance, assessments etc. It seemed a good idea to update and improve some of my instructing methods and the chance to go on a course with the RYA had arrived. So off I went, leaving DSC on Sunday lunch time pointing the car towards the south coast, I was expected at the combined services base on Thorney iIland at 9am Monday. Having to have a passport and passing through an armed guard post to go sailing seems a bit strange. The course was very well run by the top brass of the RYA; I don’t think it would be possible to learn more in a period of three days. We were treated to some of the most exciting dinghies in as new condition, each day started by setting the rigs for the weight of the crew and expected wind speed, mast rake set to within 20mm as we do at DSC on every Tuesday night Many mistakes were made but when it went well, boy, did the water whizz by with the dinghies making as much noise as the power boats. The coaches running the course proved they knew their stuff by only passing those weren’t in a state of confusion by Wednesday evening, so I didn’t come away with any more badges, but loads of ideas for the next attempt.

Wanted!

Bradford Ornithological Group (birdwatchers) run an award winning nature reserve at Stockbridge, Keighley and are looking for a small inflatable RIB (or collapsible dinghy) that can be used for ferrying 25kg bags of gravel across a shallow pond to an island. The island was created some years ago to provide a nest site for wading birds and needs a top up every so often. Condition of the dinghy is not important just so long as it floats for long enough to be hauled by hand across a 20 yd stretch of water! It also needs to be small enough to be stored in a small shed so that the local hooligans can't set sail down the River Aire never to be seen again - we don't want to lose the boat after all!

If you have such a craft lying around the house and would like rid of it, we may be able to help! Obviously, we are looking for something for free, but provided it is cheep (!) enough, we may be able to pay a reasonable price. The RYA Level 2 training course started last Sunday morning. It was the perfect weather to practice rowing and paddling.

The instructors also demonstrated a novel technique for moving a boat from one side of the jetty to the other.

Breezy Sunday

Here is the overdue tale of a breezy Sunday at Doe Park and the only men brave (foolhardy?) enough to sail. Whilst most of us were watching the wind whistle across the water, David was ready to brave the elements. There was no shortage of hands to help him rig... After sailing rapidly to the end of the pond and back, shadowed by the safety boat but without a single capsize...

David came back to shore triumphant and eager for another go...

Dan said that, if only he had brought the rig for his daughter's Topper he would be keen to give David a race. Luckily a kind but cautious (well, OK, cowardly - it was me) fellow-member was able to lend Dan a Topper so the race was on!

Dan got off to a fine start, steaming down the pond...

However, it wasn't long before both men were in the water. Several capsizes later, both boats were stuck against the dam wall...

David reefed and managed to get away first. Several more capsizes later, with the lead having changed hands several times, David crawled ashore with a bloodied nose and only one shoe: exhausted but victorious!

Bench

John has made a new bench for the waterside; it is a thing of both beauty and comfort. In due course, the bench will have a plaque dedicating it in memory of Roland. The bench was installed on Wednesday and, on Sunday, was well-polished by the behinds of Denholme SC. Here are Tony's photographs of the bench and a busy Sunday afternoon at Doe Park.

Yorkshire and Humberside Youth Sailing event

This Saturday (7th June) Doe Park will be hosting a YHYSA Travellers event which has been urgently relocated from Ulley Sailing Club. Ulley Reservoir has, of course, been closed due to flood waters threatening to breach the dam. All young sailors are welcome. The event costs £6 for DSC or YHYSA members. For all others, there is an additional fee of £10 for YHYSA membership. Sailors need to be rigged and ready for a briefing at 10.30 AM.

Due to the YHYSA event, there will be no DSC racing on Saturday.

Training

An RYA training course is underway at Denholme SC with plenty of new sailors on board. Here, Tim is explaining the principles of capsize drill. This was followed by Tim tipping participants into the water - not so bad for Tim as he was wearing a wetsuit but little chilly for the trainees. Luckily the sun was shining and the day was warm.

There were several boats on the water; a wonderful sight after the desolation of the last year. Old DSC hands supported new learners.

This year we have gained two new instructors. Andy's photograph was featured in the entry about Doe Park reopening so here is our other new instructor: Mark. Congratulations to both of you!

The tide is high

According to ITN, Bingley was the wettest place in the UK yesterday with 2.8in (71mm) of rain in 24 hours. Let's hope that some of it found its way into Doe Park Reservoir.

Today, Doe Park re-opened. Unfortunately, the contractors have not quite finished so it still looks like (is) a building site as this view from the clubhouse shows.

Doe Park Water Activity Centre and Denholme SC shared the water today so there were both paddlers and sailors. Kayaks and canoes were managed by Chris from Doe Park Centre.

Alan, fresh from a holiday in Greece and one of our newest instructors, Andrew, took care of the sailors.

For the first time boats were rigged (note the new surface of the dinghy pen)...

and launched.

It was certainly good to see boats on the water at Doe Park again!

Barbara did a great job cleaning and managing the galley.

Unfortunately, we were not able to offer a barbecue as we had expected to. Apparently Bentley's, the contractors, had offered to provide food for the event but at the last minute withdrew the offer. However, we managed with crisps, chocolate and biscuits from a last-minute run to the Co-Op.

All in all, it was a good day, with plenty of visitors trying out the centre and some very happy Denholme sailors, pleased to be home.

Andrew and Alan helped at an open day for people with disabilities at Pugneys Country Park. We have received the following letter from Wakefield Council:

I thought I would drop you a line to thank your members of the club for their help during the disabled open day at Pugneys Country Park on the 22nd of April. You will be aware the day was a great success, it is estimated that over 250 disabled people and their carers, from organised groups and individuals attended taking part in canoeing and sailing.

The event emphasises the regional importance of Pugneys as an accessible watersports centre and this can only be achieved in partnership with organisations such as Denholme Sailing club and its members.

Once again many thanks to yourselves and your members attending the open day.

Did they make it this time?

So we were off again in search of the Farnes. We had tried turning south with no successes; looked as though it was time to head north. On Friday we looked out from the walls of Hartlepool Marina to see rolling swells, some over one foot high, so we ate, drank tea and went to our bunks ready for an early start. At first light on Saturday nothing happened as we were all asleep, but by 10 we were off, heading north, drinking tea, sometimes going faster than an old man can walk.

The word was out the Denholme boys (and the girls who aren't paid up members but we will keep that quiet) were on tour, One by one the towns pulled down their shutters and would not let us in, posies were placed at marina walls with orders to throw fish guts and small children if we should try to enter. We used the cunning plan of sailing an oscillating course with intermittent use of the engine and sails to throw them from our scent; by early evening North Shields was ours.

After a night entertained by Scooch who came so close to victory we did manage an early start with a very pleasant sail back to Hartlepool. Our crew of 7 became 8, not by anyone giving birth but a delivery from the RNLI. After a short stay he left, jumping over the side a couple of miles from land telling us to sail on, confident his mates would find him once he raised the alarm (and they think dinghy sailors are mad!).

We were not ready to return to dry land but time had run out. How can a weekend pass so fast? Many thanks to Calvyn and Mike for yet another enjoyable trip and good luck in the Baltic this summer. Want to sail on Black Diamond after they return from the tall ships races? Then please get in touch.

Progress at Doe Park?

I went up to Doe Park today (5 May) just to see how things are doing. The water level is still well down below the tower and it looks like there's at least another good month's worth of work to do just to tidy the place up. They have yet to lay the new road surface along the dam wall, and the car park looks like a bomb site. I noticed that the contractors have put a new slipway in from the council pen, which they are starting to resurface by the looks of things.

Anyone know anything for definite about when we'll be sailing again? Spring Bank looks a bit optimistic to me - unless the contractors are going to really push the boat out :-)

The pictures don't tell the whole story. We had the first rain for weeks (and making up for lost time). Between the periods of total calm there was some pretty good wind. The towing didn't work as the engine on Tim's fancy boat, um, failed. Luckily for everyone, that's when the wind picked up!

But in the end we all dried off in the cafe with a cup of tea and some of Anne's birthday cake.

The Farnes

So in the quest to sail closer to the kettle we dabbled again with the dark side, the type of sailing where the kettle can come too. If I fitted a gas ring on the mirror will I need a boat safety cert? What about class rules? Well the first choice went wrong. We would have been OK on plan A: going for a sail on Fri. night, but when we arrived at Hartlepoool it did seem a good idea to stay put. We were off early on Sat heading south towards the Farnes; 3hrs 15 min later we passed the entrance to Whitby. This is rumored to be a record for Black Diamond – I bet they say that to everybody. By now it was getting a bit wet and it wasn’t rain. We had a bit of a sail south of Whitby trying to find a bit of shelter and then motored in to Whitby as soon as we had enough water, a short wait for the bridge and then into the marina . The most important discovery Sat night was that very expensive fish and chips taste like the cheap ones but you have to queue up to get them. Sunday was a very pleasant return trip. I am just glad we didn’t sail into Kafiga landing that would have been daft. So we still have the unfinished task of finding the Farnes. If you fancy this then please get in touch, we might be able to book another weekend before Black Diamond leaves for a summer in the Baltic and points north. Thanks to all who sailed; what other sailing club would provide a driver for those who are getting a bit past it and are not capable of driving themselves? You should see how Stephen tackles mini roundabouts just brilliant.

Force Eight

DSC on Derwent Water

Tim has sent photos and a video from the recent day sail on Derwent Water. It looks like a glorious day and I'm really sad to have missed it (family, half-term etc). Clearly Tim's New Year resolution was to make sure his sailing trips had both wind and sunshine (see the January trip to Pugneys). Great work Tim!

The Dam

We have heard that the major works will be completed by the end of March, after which the only job remaining will be to restore the site. The Committee will shortly be meeting with the contractors, Yorkshire Water and Bradford Council to arrange the reopening of the site and the club so watch this space!

Playtime at Pugneys

Some go round the southern oceans, others try to be the fastest, but we had to be back in time to see if Charlie snuffs it and what happens to Tracy so we went to Pugneys. It has got to be the easiest way to sail: dinghies already launched, tea and coffee close to hand. Blue skies and wind - yep if you missed it the first time, blue skies and wind!!!

When we arrived we all got excited about the white caps and waves at the east end of the lake... well, OK it might have just been me. This disappeared before we could get down to it so no surfing but a good afternoon's sailing, gradually dropping to a F3 I would guess by the end of the day. It was very nice to all meet up again and if you want to be with us on the next trip just make sure I have your e-address or phone no. I'm not going to mention any names but some were more interested in the buns than the sailing: "I haven't brought my sailing gear" came from more than one direction. Anyway back to the important stuff: it looks like she is going to get away with it again. Will it be the statue that finishes him off? Deirdre and Ken have been reeled in again by innocent Tracy. I bet Blanche works it out first.

High walls and high water

The walls of the spillway are now so high that scaffolding is needed. Apparently, every hundred years or so there is an immense flood and, if this were to happen, the reservoir would need to release a lot of water very quickly. The new spillway will channel the water safely down the hill into the beck and thence to the next reservoir. I noticed on my way to Doe Park that Hewenden Reservoir is also getting a new spillway. But, I can't help wondering, once the chain of reservoirs comes to an end, where will the flood water go?

In any case, there is plenty of water in Doe Park at the moment!

AGM

Denholme Sailing Club's AGM was held on Sunday 12th November at the Great Northern Pub in Thornton.

Members gathered for the meeting and dutifully studied the agenda.

Barbara welcomed Reservoir Blogs readers to the meeting.

The serious business of the meeting was conducted as the Commodore and Treasurer presented their reports.

A new committee was elected, or rather, shuffled. Members could be forgiven for thinking that the new committee looks surprisingly like the old one but there are significant differences. In particular, we have a new Commodore, Treasurer and Secretary.

After the meeting, food was served.

Due to a mix-up with the catering, the promised pie and peas did not materialise. Instead the Great Northern served up a fine buffet of pizza, chips, bhajis and rolls. The meeting provided an excellent opportunity for members to catch up!

Thanks to Melanie for organising the meeting and to all members of the committee for their work over the last year.

Roads and Spoil

The preliminary work at Doe Park has finished and the real construction work is underway. The slipway has been completely blocked by an access road allowing heavy traffic to access the dam and the pontoons are looking very forlorn. There is a walkway for pedestrians on the inside of the dam wall but the public footpath has been closed.

There is another road giving access to the spillway. Bags of materials have been moved onto the site...

and the big yellow digger is still... well, big and yellow.

The excavated spoil has to go somewhere, and here it is. I presume that some of it will go back onto the dam in due course, but what will happen to the rest?

Kind of late; sorry!

Sunshine, scenery, sailing... what more could anyone want for a day out?

Some people preferred to investigate chocolate buying facilities in Keswick or to climb Catbells. The remaining twenty of us piled into five Wayfarers hired from Nichol End Marina. We sailed around the lake, not forgetting to shout "STARBOARD" when required. We lunched at a nice little cafe (well, log) on an island after which we paddled back to the marina. Yes, it was DSC on a day out so, of course, the wind had vanished!

Curry supper

We may have no sailing water, but Denholme sailors still know how to have a good time! On 7th October 2006 we had a curry buffet at Habib's Restaurant hosted by Satish in aid of Sewa International. After we had eaten, the Commodore said a few words then Kalpa and Shaila, with interjections from Satish, gave a interesting (inspiring) presentation about their recent Mount Kilmanjaro trek which has raised over £62,000 so far. The Sewa International website has a full report about the trek with press clippings and photographs.

Sewa International is currently raising money for the Kenya Drought appeal and has a secure page for online donations. Kenya is suffering from the worst drought in 20 years which means that crops have failed and in some parts of the country 80% of livestock has died. At DSC we complain about the local water shortage that deprives us of our playground but we know that when it rains next year, the reservoir will fill and everything will be back to normal. In genuinely drought stricken areas like Kenya, there is no knowing when the rains will return and, by the time there is water in Kenya's ponds again, millions of people will have died. So, go on, get out your credit card and nip over to Sewa International!

As we set off the conditions seemed too tough for the event, with many finding it hard to get comfy, the wind speed too high, the light too intense, so the decision was made. After 200yds we stopped for more food. This was a brilliant tactical decision: tea, bacon, sausages, eggs, black pudding, beans, toast; the really brave went for the full breakfast option. So again we set off looking for an early advantage and this was soon to come, not long after rounding the heugh (huff) the first one fell; it gave me a real inner glow as it was someone so near to myself. The next fell near the location of one of the east coast’s many pier chimney combos; the late night camp fires then a long solo drive had worked well. We had to move further offshore and find a nice rolly swell to increase the soporific effect. One by one they all fell, the web mistress and group captain being very difficult but if you look closely, photo evidence can be found. One competitor had fallen early in the orthodox way i.e. on a bunk, but rising to gain max team points he managed an incredible feat of a perfect score through a full 25 mins atop a winch. As yet we think this position is unbeatable.
OK it is never as easy as you think and we had pushed the rules to the limit, one of the crew was a ringer – not only was his membership questionable but had he fallen during the trip? We were not sure, so as a test he was placed before the helm, his fingers placed around the wheel rim, then we all backed off to see the results. There could be no doubt. By his actions it was obvious he was asleep, the whole vessel a ghost ship quietly weaving its way into Blyth, dredger ahead pushed by a tug boat astern, tied up by the locals until we gently awoke at beer o’clock, just in time to go to the pub.

Black Diamond

At the weekend a group of Denholme sailors went out on Black Diamond - at 45ft Bowman Corsair owned by Sailing NorthEast. It was the second trip on Black Diamond so there was a record to beat!

We left Hartlepool Marina in the early hours of Saturday morning to moor up in Hartlepool fish docks for a couple of hours. Mmmm, nice!

Saturday was a beautiful day once the early mist had burned off. However, the wind varied between very little and none so there was as much motoring as sailing.

We spent Saturday night in Blyth Marina where the Royal Northumberland Yacht Club has a clubhouse (with excellent but slippery showers) and bar in a decommissioned light ship: HY Tyne, one of the last remaining lightships afloat. Cal's catering on Black Diamond is highly recommended; we ate very well indeed. Our evening meal included, for Tim and Dan, fresh mackerel caught during the voyage.

On Sunday morning we left Blyth hoping for force 3-4 winds blowing from the SE.

What we got was even less wind the day before with rain followed by fog severe enough to need the foghorn and watchers posted on deck. However, there was some excitement when we became part of an RNLI training exercise.

Peter won the fashion award for the weekend due to his co-ordinated oilskins and seaboots. Notice how the blue of his lifejacket is picked up in the boot toecaps. Apparently, in his ten years and many cruises with these boots, this was the first time that they have been worn at sea!

Everybody took a turn at the helm...

And proved their mastery of essential sailing skills such as washing up.

Big yellow digger

Work is continuing at Doe Park. The car park has been extended and leveled. Obviously this is for the use of the construction company but if they leave it like that then it will surely be a benefit to Doe Park users in the future.

A hard surface has been laid below the gate, presumably so that heavy equipment can be moved between the dam and the car park/site office.

There's clearly no chance of getting boats down for a sneaky sail (even though the water has risen again and the wind was perfect)!

The spillway is being rebuilt and the work here seems to have progressed quite a bit in the last two weeks.

And every construction site has to have a big yellow digger!

The work begins...

Work began last week on the improvements to the spillway at Doe Park Reservoir. The clubhouse is now the site office and the site is completely closed with a fence blocking the carpark entrance.

Heavy construction vehicles have now been moved onto the site along with piles of rubble .

Down by the spillway, there is a digger at work. Rubble has been used to make a hard surface on which the digger can work.

Other members of DSC were at Doe Park yesterday; here is Barbara in her new role as blackberrying secretary. Steve D. and Lesley were also about; Lesley taking photos for a scrapbooking project about the reservoir.

Ironically the water level has risen (compare this picture with the last weekend in July) to the point where we could probably be sailing if the place were not full of diggers, trucks and rollers!

For those who are sailing elsewhere, here's a reminder of how lovely our reservoir can be.

The trip to Coniston was very good. At last we had some wind. The last 3 trips to Coniston have involved a slow drift and lots of paddling but on Sunday 13/8 we had a perfect breeze blowing us south down the lake with Peel Island arriving so quick I wondered if the parks authority had built a second island nearer to the north end of the lake. Some put in a reef and had a fully controlled beat back. Some sailed back with full sails and enjoyed the spray. Some set off reefed but could not resist the urge to catch up so the reefs were shaken out. Despite passing the boat hire centre one hour early we (Tim/Paul) still managed to be 1/2 hour late back; the wind was just too good to resist.

Denholme SC was well represented at Bass Week this year.

Well done to Julia Pancini, Alice Milnes, Philip Jennings, Chris Edwards and Ben Murrell. Best result was Alice's second in the RNLI pursuit and here she is receiving one of her five trophies. Danger Deep Mud

The tide is still going out at Doe Park.

The dangers of deep water have been replaced by the dangers of deep mud. The mudscape is reminiscent of Morecambe Bay at low water and, in the evening, if you listen carefully, you can hear the the gentle sucking sounds of drying mud.

Apart from the new mud warning signs, the only sign of activity at Doe Park is some markers near the tower: presumably to gauge the water level if/when it rises again.

Apart from the industrial ugliness around the slipways...

the reservoir's emptiness is full of beauty. The valley is reverting to a place of calm and green as the stream gurgles peacefully through the middle.

Plants, like this montbretia, are sprouting on the valley slopes and floor, possibly even to bloom.

The question is, though, if the reservoir dries up completely, what will happen to the Doe Park monster?

The Last Sail

As reported in the Sailing Club Update, the water is now too low for sailing.

From today, sailing is suspended until the construction work has been completed and the reservoir has filled up again. For the last sail to take place, we needed enough people to recover the safety boat at the end of the afternoon.

After some time waiting around for people to arrive....

(not least, someone who had keys to the clubhouse), the decision was made to sail, despite the ominous presence of some blue-green algae on the water.

It wasn't easy to launch the safety boat...

because the mud at the waterline was so soft that the trolley wheels got stuck. To prevent this happening again, Peter and Cameron laid some netting on the ground to make a safe surface for launching.
Eventually, dinghies were launched and sailed.

It was an interesting sail as the newly steep sides of the pond had a strange effect on the wind. It was also very gusty as the weather changed from sunny-ish to rain. Cameron, Danny and Ray retired due to equipment failure. Aisha and Dick both fell in the water. This left Anne to win the final race of the season - congratulations!.

After sailing the safety boat was recovered and put away for the last time.

The 2006 sailing season at Doe Park is over.

Lost things

As the water continues to fall, the reservoir gives back some of the things that it has taken from fishermen and sailors.

Cameron tells me that this is a 'lure' but some people call it a 'wobbler' because when you cast it into the water it wobbles, simulating the movement of a small and tasty fish. Apparently, a lure of this size would be used when fishing for pike.

From neither a sailor nor an angler, I hope!

DENHOLME SAILING CLUB UPDATE

As at 30 June 2006

The water level has dropped and it is no longer viable to sail.

The committee has decided that sailing will be suspended from Sunday 9 July 2006. If there are enough members available to launch and retrieve the Safety Boat we could have this last weekend on our own water.

Regarding other venues while our water is ‘out of action’. Some members have opted for Scammonden Water where there is excellent racing organised. For members who prefer something nearer we would suggest Halifax SC. Lots of room in the boat compound and a great expanse of water. If you prefer other venues please refer to your March Newsletter.

Members' boats can be left in our boat pen, but this is at their own risk. In the future we could ask members to remove boats to allow YW to make alterations to the pen. We will keep you informed.

Topper NE Area championships

Saturday the 24th June saw 5 of us traveling to Scaling Dam - we arrived in time despite nearly getting lost round Guisborough. Ben Chris Alice and myself went for the NE Area championships (Inland) event. Mel was ground crew. It was rather cloudy and despite what these pictures may indicate we did get some nice breeze during the races. There was a fleet of 21 in all with ( I think) all the NE Squadies.
There were two short races and one long one just after lunch - that was a challenge to the memory as the course was held up during the 5 min start - so those us with a short memory and not close to the lead boat were soon confused! "Mum -Are you ready yet?"

Anyway non of us disgraced ourselves. A very well done to Chris as this was his first pure "Topper" event. Alice for being the 1st girl overall and Ben for doing all three races and getting a 9th in the last race. I was a consitent 16th!

The Island

The water is very low: possibly as low as it is going to get.

The island has appeared at last. It'll be interesting to see whether the island starts to grass over with being exposed all summer.

There's no sign of construction work yet so I guess it is still possible to sail as long as there is wind and enough people to drag the safety boat up the slipway. It's a long haul for sure but remember that Cameron and Danny will definitely be sailing tomorrow!

I wouldn't recommend trying to sail round buoy number one though!

Youths playing away from home

Well I have finally managed to get myself on site - thanks Aisha. I had been hoping to do a summary of where the the youngsters were sailing during the spring ans summer.

The first Picture here is of Chris and Ben in the Hobie at Scamonden- first time sailing together in this boat. Alice is hiding behind the ENT somewhere! - just had to remove it!

These are from the Yorkshire and Humberside youth Travellers and these were pictures taken at Grimworth (Yorks Dales Club) 2 weeks ago - there was some challenging wind- Alice and Ben are sailing the Hobie 405 together they needed to be on the wire but had not practiced this yet!

This weekend we are going in convoy to Scaling Dam near Whitby (Ben Alice and Chris ) to the Topper Area Champs/ Open meeting - which means I get to sail (and embarrass myself) too - you could come Aisha they are always wanting more adults to sail too.

Because the Blue Green Alge and moving the boats about the country we have decided it is not good to sail at Denholme as we do not want to contaminate other waters, so we will be probably be at Halifax from now onwards.

Talking of which there is a Yorks and Humberside Youth event at Halifax on Sat 1st July - the more Denholme sailors we get the more points the club will get! Its 10.00 to join = 6.00 entry fee or a bit more on the day - if not a member - I think that's right.

Sunday Sailing

Cameron emailed me the following:

"Danny and I are planning on sailing this Sunday if enough turn up but are a bit worried that others won't go if they think numbers will be too low for sailing. Consequence - not enough people turn up! Any chance you can add something to the Blog to say at least two people will be turning up to encourage others to do likewise so that we get enough to drag the safety boat back up the slipway? Make sure you don't tell 'em who it is that's going, as this will put people off!

This could well be the last Sunday sail so we're keen to get out there."

Given that Cameron and Danny are both strong-looking types with plenty of boat-hauling muscle, I think it is an advantage to know "who it is that's going"!

Midsummer Barbeque

Water status: going down. Still enough for sailing although mark #1 is now out of the race.

There's a bit of a problem with blue-green algae though. I'm including links because I didn't know what blue-green algae are and it seems that they are actually pretty interesting and, in fact, not algae. They are cyanobacteria: a type of single celled bacteria. That means that there must have been huge numbers to cause the visible blue markings around the reservoir. Cyanobacteria are some of the oldest types of living organisms; there are fossil cyanobacteria which are more than 3.5 billion years old. The reason that cyanobacteria are green is because they contain clorophyll and, like plants, manufacture their own food from light through the process of photosynthesis. Apparently, the chlorophyll in plants is due to cyanobacteria living inside the plants; a symbiotic relationship which developed millenia ago. However, although, as the picture below shows, the Doe Park cyanabacteria are clearly blue-green, some types of blue-green algae are actually more red or pink. The Red Sea is red because of occasional algal blooms of reddish cyanobacteria.

Some types of cyanobacteria can be important as food sources but others can be toxic to humans and animals. Unfortunately, we have the latter type at Doe Park which means that water users need to be especially careful around areas where there is blue-green scum on or near the water.

There were important food sources in evidence at Doe Park today, however, at the Midsummer Barbeque! Sausages, salads, burgers and beer were consumed with gusto; particular thanks to Ronwen for organising the food.

Hartlepool

The trip should have been a day trip on Sunday the 11th. To save having to drive up early on Sunday, 6 of us claimed squatters rights on Saturday night. After meeting at one of Hartlepool's finest Italian restaurants we departed to find Black Diamond. Someone said they knew where it was berthed so the others followed, how difficult could it be to find? The following tour of Hartlepool eventually ended in a wet scrap yard: obviously not the sort of place to find our yacht. After a slightly rolly night we went in search of our last crew member who rang to say he was nearly with us just as I was going to sleep. On return to Black Diamond we were met with bacon sarnis a safety brief and cast off . We had a day of sunshine with some cloudy bits. We didn't sail any where in particular; the wind was very light. I think the day's speed record was set by Dan at 7.4Kts or is this still in dispute? We ended up back at Hartlepool marina. By the amount of smiles during the day it was a success. Many thanks to Sailing North East especially Cal and good luck in the tall yachts racing in Spain. Doe Park is fuller than full, with water pouring out of the overflow. I'm amazed that the pond has filled up so quickly especially with the valve open. However, whilst I am pleased that we will be able to sail for longer, I'm starting to feel a bit frustrated with the delays; I imagine that's even more true for the people at Yorkshire Water.

Last Tuesday we moved one of the jetties which means that the 'M62' slipway is now open for traffic.

Beaches are emerging at the southern end of the pond. Shame there's no sand!

Ullswater

On Sunday, several Denholme SC members travelled to Ullswater for a day's sailing. Some people took their own boats whilst others hired. The day was cool and misty; hills were shrouded in mist but undoubtedly still beautiful. The weather was difficult: it was either raining and windy or dry and calm. However, it was great day and I really enjoyed it!

A few weeks ago, an old boat appeared by the clubhouse. The holes in the hull keeep her off the water but she makes a very good bench for teabreak.

The Tap is Open

There's no doubt now that the water is going out. Here's the water tower this week.

The water is going down quickly, as the two pictures of the slipway show. The first was taken at about 4PM on Saturday 29th April and the second at the same time the following day.

Sailing continues as usual, albeit with a slight air of desperation. Sunday's first race was more of a gentle float across the pond (no wind) but we know that we have to sail as much as we can whilst we still have a bit of water! Here is Saturday's Race Officer with the first sailor home.

Water Going Down; Sun Coming Out

Yorkshire Water started to let the water out just over a week ago. These pictures of the water tower and the slipway show how the water level has dropped.

Where there was only a tidemark last week, the tyres are now fully out of the water.

Today brought sunshine, variable winds and sailors.

Racing was slow (stationary) at times so no records were set.

Luncheon was taken out of doors. Legs, first glimpsed last week, are clearly now in season.

For some people it's daffodils, for others the sound of the cuckoo but at Doe Park the first sign of spring is LEGS.

How about the water? At first glance, the water level seems as high as ever. But look carefully at these tyres. Could this be a tide mark? Is the water dropping as we watch?

The water level should have dropped by a metre since last week... Hmm, looking at the slipway, however, there seems to be as much water as ever; perhaps it's just a couple of inches down?

Today offered sleet with patches of sun. Here are Chris and Ray rigging the Omega during one of those sunny spells, ready for the Seamanship trainees. The continued abundance of water means that we may be able to run a novice training course of some kind this year. Open Day

The Open Day took place in wind and rain as the weather seems determined to scupper Yorkshire Water's plans for the reservoir. However, a good number of people turned up for a sail and a hotdog. Chris, Ray, Anne, Alan, Mark and Tim, who did a wonderful job of taking visitors out onto the water, got extremely wet! Still, people seemed to enjoy themselves, torrents notwithstanding, and the Commodore even took several new memberships, despite the fact that there will be no (sailing) water for most of this year. Today is the day that Yorkshire Water, according to the plan, will start to reduce the water level in the reservoir. Over the next week the level should drop by a metre. However, it's been raining. And raining. And raining. If this continues, then as fast as Yorkshire Water tries to lose the water, the rain will top up the pond. It must be nature's own April Fool prank.

April bluster made today too windy, even for the most intrepid sailors. Here's one of them bravely gybing round 9 in last week's gusts.

The Slipway

Following a few days of heavy rain the reservoir is at its fullest with only one week to go before Yorkshire Water starts pulling the plug.

There was plenty of wind today which made for fast sailing; the swiftest boats covered six laps in just over 30 minutes.

The Dam

This is the original dam, built in 1862 with a height of 24m / 78.7ft (Yorkshire Water). From the beginning of April another metre of dam will be visible each week.

The photograph was taken from a hill above the reservoir. Nineteen young sailors came for the training day which included races and instruction on hiking and on rigging the boat. It was a very gusty day so several sailors learned how cold the Doe Park water can be!

In April 2006 Yorkshire Water will reduce the water level in Doe Park Reservoir by one meter per week until the level has dropped by five metres. At that point, contractors can begin work to rebuild the dam and overflow. The work is expected to finish in December 2006. This means that there will be no sailing on Doe Park for most of the 2006 season. This blog is so that sailors and other interested people can follow the progress of the works.
